CDs in register

Schedule 2-3 CD liquids have an overage quantity in their original bottles. In other words the manufacturer adds more than the bottle states. It is usually 10ml, can be up to 30mls or even low as 0ml. The manufacturer does this to take in to account any descrepencies when the volume of liquid is measured out. When doing CD quantity audits, any changes between actual and theoretical volumes should be written in the CD register with an explanation that takes into account the overage. In other words differences between actual and theoretical quantities cannot just be rectified without an explanation.

CDs on shelf

How many times do we check to see if any dispensed schedule 4 CDs on our shelves are over the 28-day expiry? Do we have a system to check this? Locums- be aware when you start you shift.

Tips:

Ask dispensers if there are any diazepam, lorazepam scripts done up on shelf and check expiry on script. Ask counter assistants to show you prescriptions before they are given out to patients.

Queries with CDs

Know who your Accountable Officer for Controlled Drugs is for the PCT you work in. For Hampshire PCT it’s Matthew Thomas. Southampton City PCT and Portsmouth PCT have their own. If you have any untoward incidents regarding CD, any shortages, dispensing errors, any inappropriate prescribing of CDs. Depending on the nature of the concern, the officer will forward the query to either an RPSGB inspector, Police Officer, or the GMC.
